PROJECT WOK

Employment is crucial in shaping young people’s lives and identities. Many young people seeking employment are doing so to secure survival, not only for themselves, but their families too. Being employed also has its social dimensions where it can determine young people’s meaningful participation within society (Du-Toit, 2003). Young people, in particular, continue to migrate to urban areas for social and economic reasons. However, there are minimal opportunities for formal tertiary education, limited employment for workers with no experience, and the absorptive capacity for the formal economy is restrictive. These limitations then lead to a substantial increase in squatting, crime, substance abuse, prostitution, gender based violence and destruction of family life.

The transition from high school or further education into employment can also be a daunting experience for youth. Being able to set yourself apart from other potential candidates, plays a vital part in being able to secure success. Having support during this phase not only builds self confidence but also creates capable and active citizens. While there are organisations that are working to provide youth with income from temporary or casual employment opportunities, Project Yumi Inc, through its program Project Wok aims to empower Papua New Guinean youth with sustainable skills that will help them create the foundations they need to build a successful future.

Twenty four students graduated from the pilot program in 2019, with six students successfully completing 12 week internships with Kina Bank. After this success our aim is to expand our reach and offer the program to whole grade 12 cohorts of Port Moresby High Schools. As a part of our commitment to assist PNG youth with employment opportunities we would like to continue the internship program as well as host a Youth Tertiary & Careers Fair in 2021, which will offer visitors the latest information on tertiary studies, further training and employment opportunities.
